Research Status & Deliverables

Task: HVDC Reference Book (Olive Book):2024 Edition
Task Description: Information is being developed for the HVDC Reference Book (also known as the Olive Book). The updates incorporate new developments and experiences and assist users in specifying HVDC system components, designing overhead lines, and assessing existing HVDC systems for life extension options.
Update:

• Edits were done to the HVDC Reference Book for all the chapters to be consistent in terminology and updating some figures with high quality graphics for the hardcopy version.
• 2023 edition of the HVDC Reference Book was published in December 2023. Hardcopy of the HVDC Reference Book will be published in early 2024.
• HVDC cost estimates are being collected and will be incorporated in 2024 edition of the HVDC Reference Book.

Task: Technical and Operational Comparison of UPFC and other FACTS Controllers such as SVC, STATCOM, and Synchronous Condenser
Task Description: Shunt compensation is needed to improve voltage profile in transmission systems by providing reactive power. Different technologies – Static Var Compensator (SVC), Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), and Synchronous Condenser – are available. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) consists of both series compensation (Static Series Synchronous Compensator – SSSC) and shunt compensation (Static Synchronous Compensator – STATCOM). Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) consists of two SSSCs, one in each line to transfer power from one line to the other. Technical and operational merits are compared for UPFC, IPFC, SVC, STATCOM and Synchronous Condenser and a technical update was published in 2023. In 2024, A FACTS Application Guide will be developed including all FACTS controllers – TCSC, UPFC, IPFC, SVC, STATCOM, SSSC, and Synchronous Condenser.
Update:

• Performance and cost information on UPFC was collected and compared with other FACTS controllers in 2023.
• A FACTS Application Guide is being prepared now and will be ready by the end of 2024.

Task: HVDC & FACTS Technology Watch Newsletter
Task Description: To foster new opportunities in the HVDC and FACTS areas and disseminate technical developments in a timely manner, HVDC & FACTS Technology Watch is published annually. The newsletter reports on current and new HVDC and FACTS installations around the world as well as the latest developments in HVDC and FACTS technologies.
Update:

• Collecting information on the new HVDC and FACTS projects that are being planned.
