The Need for 3D Scanning Technologies

Meeting Materials
WebEx Project Update: Vendor Demo – 2nd April 2025
Meeting Summary: The meeting focused on vendor interview and demo of 3D scanning platform, with a focus on its practical applications, workflow integration, and potential for substation use. Vendor provided a live demonstration, showcasing system setup, mobile app functionality, cloud-based post-processing, and advanced visualization tools. Demo included features such as sequential scanning, scan stitching, and the use of reference points to improve accuracy. The team also discussed API-driven capabilities including virtual staging, wayfinding, change detection, and point cloud classification. Emphasis was placed on collaboration tools, content tagging, and model extensions to support utility-specific needs.
WebEx Project Update: Project Kick-off meeting – 5th March 2025
Meeting Summary: The meeting focused on 3D scanning technologies, their applications, and implementation strategies. Participants shared experiences and goals, while the presenter covered key scanning methods, including drone-based, backpack-mounted, and photogrammetry techniques. 3D scanning enhances substation modeling, reducing manual risks and enabling digital twins, AI-driven point cloud classification, and robotic missions. The discussion also highlighted the importance of aligning multiple scans, detecting changes over time, and integrating AI with software vendors. Moving forward, the team will evaluate vendors, conduct interviews, and refine specifications for their project.
