Project Description
This project traditionally has three main avenues for technology transfer, which includes:
- Hosting meetings (virtual or face-to-face).
- Creating training material.
- Developing technical reports on various switching and safety-related topics.
Feedback from project funders is critical to aligning tasks with priorities for both short- and long-term tasks.
Research Value
Improvements to worker safety and reliability, reductions in unscheduled outages, and enhanced operating efficiency and compliance with regulatory requirements may be achieved through this project’s research of methodologies, human performance issues, and technological advances related to operational switching.
How to Get Engaged
Probably the best way to get engaged is to join the project! Here’s a short write-up with more information: SPN. Being a project funder gets you invited to all of the meetings, adds you to the list for all email updates, and gives you a seat at the table for giving feedback regarding tasks and priorities. You also get all project deliverables from a calendar year for no additional cost.
Another great way to get involved is to volunteer for one of the officer roles. We have Chair and Vice-chair positions that help plan and run the meetings and events, stimulate conversations, and help shape the direction of the project.
FAQ
Q: Is this project just for lineman and field workers?
A: No! Switching duties aren’t done in a vacuum, and teamwork and coordination is needed with the system operators and planners working in the control center, too.
Q: Is the focus only on safety?
A: Again, the answer is no. While “safety” is certainly paramount, as the name of the project clearly states, there is also the “reliability” component where events on the system can negatively impact delivery or stability, and we work on improving performance in this regard as well.
