Transmission lines are being called upon to meet increasing power demand and to improve system reliability. EPRI has developed a portfolio which includes reference material and software tools to assist utility engineers to design and construct overhead lines that are reliable, safe and cost-effective.

The line design area encompasses all aspects of overhead line design, both electrical and mechanical, including a focus on safe construction and design for maintenance. The use, performance, and application of composite structures continues to be an evolving and increasingly important interest area, which justifies specific ongoing research. The resilience of overhead lines is also a key interest area for many utilities and EPRI’s research explores how to leverage technology to harden transmission line networks and decrease emergency restoration times.
