Research Status & Deliverables

Transformer Asset Health Research

Task: Recording and analyzing online data for additional transformer parameters
Task Description: The remaining task for 2024 is to perform online monitoring of transformer parameters and compare the results to previously performed offline testing. The online monitoring has been performed at EPRI’s 138kV research substation in Lenox, MA and at EPRI’s Power Delivery and Utilization lab in Charlotte, NC. Preliminary online monitoring results were presented in 2023, with additional results expected in 2024.
Update:

  • October 2021: An online transformer monitoring system was installed and commissioned at the EPRI 138kV research substation
  • March 2022: Offline transformer testing was performed at the EPRI 138kV research substation for turns ratio and short circuit impedance
  • August 2023: Equipment was migrated to EPRI’s Power Delivery and Utilization lab in Charlotte, NC for further evaluation
  • February 2024: Test setup was revised, with equipment being evaluated for integrity after extended outage

CCVT Asset Health Research

Task: Evaluate capacitive coupling voltage transformer (CCVT) secondary voltage signatures during power system phenomena
Task Description: The goal of this task is to better understand CCVT performance relative to nearby power system phenomena or signs of nearby equipment failures. Testing is planned to take place at the 138kV research substation in Lenox, MA. The test plan encompasses the recording and evaluation of voltage signals associated with a CCVT near a floating partial discharge and corona discharge. The test plan intends to record secondary voltage signals in a relay, an oscilloscope, and a power quality monitor for comparative analysis.

Update:

  • March 2024: Pre-testing begins in Charlotte ED&CS Lab
  • April 2024: Testing executed at Lenox 138kV Research Substation
  • May 2024: Analysis of research results
  • June 2024: Submission of deliverable to publications department
